The UK shift to electric vehicles (EVs)
Charging time for an electric vehicle can be anywhere between 30 minutes or more than 12 hours depending on the size of the battery and the speed of the charging point.
For example, a typical electric car with a 60kWh battery takes just under 8 hours to charge from empty-to-full with a 7kW charging point.
However, rather than waiting for a battery to fully charge, most drivers top-up their charge periodically. For many electric vehicles, you can add up to 100 miles of range in around 35 minutes with a 50kW rapid charger. Obviously the bigger your car’s battery and the slower the charging point, the longer it takes to charge from empty to full.
The shift to electric vehicles has gained significant momentum with the announcement in November 2020 that new petrol and diesel cars and vans will no longer be sold in the UK after 2030, with hybrid sales banned from 2035.
Although COVID-19 hit UK car registrations in 2020, sales of both electric cars and plug-in hybrids rose sharply, with plug-in cars now accounting for more than 10 per cent of UK sales.
